Label TextThomas Hill specialized in landscapes of Yosemite like this one. He made his first trip to the Yosemite Valley in 1865 and returned there repeatedly in order to make studies out-of-doors that would then inform his work in the studio. Hill spent the better part of his later career in California, settling in San Francisco and taking on a commission for the environmentalist John Muir to document the landscapes of Alaska.
