This unnerving sphinx was commissioned by Paul Verlaine as the frontispiece for the Symbolist poet’s book of erotic poetry, Parallèlement (1889) and better known as illustrated by Pierre Bonnard in an edition published by Ambrose Vollard in the following year. The etching eventually ended up as an illustration for Verlaine’s 1896 book of erotic poetry, Chair (in English, "Flesh").
