Label TextGifford Beal was a prolific painter and active member of the New York arts community, including acting as the longest running president of the Art Students’ League from 1914-1929. The light touch and evocative use of color in this winter landscape showcase the Impressionist influences in Beal’s earlier work, inspired by his training with William Merritt Chase, with whom he began studying at the age of twelve. Beal’s work subsequently evolved in new directions, moving from more hard-edged Realist scenes to vibrant depictions of the theater and circus, and finally to increasingly abstract color and brushwork late in life.
