The Persistence of Memory, with its hallucinatory dripping clocks (1931) is one of the most iconic images of the Surrealist movement and, indeed, of the 20th century. Like his fellow Surrealists, Dalí cultivated the unconscious as the source of his dream-like inventions. As in the case of this disturbing painting, the resulting images are intended to unsettle. The airbrushed figures literalize the struggle for power at this point during the War years, which, we are asked to contemplate, was swayed as much by racism as by sexual exploitation.
