Label TextThe Dutch-born Jongkind was a pioneering precursor of Impressionism. He arrived in Paris in 1846 and took as his subject everyday sights such as this: boats that provided the facilities for ordinary Parisians to wash and dry their clothes. This small sketch, done rapidly outdoors, centers on an improbable flowering tree, with the rising steam of the bath houses gesturing towards the distinctive silhouette of the Hôtel des Invalides in the background. The juxtaposition of familiar historical monuments and the less-than-picturesque sights of everyday life in the modern world, would become a staple of progressive art in the decades to follow.
