Label TextThe conquests of Alexander the Great (ca. 356-323 BCE) extended Greek culture and power across the ancient Mediterranean world. He became a legendary figure, and his royal portrait, originally designed by the ancient Greek sculptor Lysippos, was copied and imitated long after his death. The portrait, as we can see in this exceptional late Roman version, depicted Alexander with tousled, 'leonine' hair, a slightly open mouth, and a distant gaze.
