Not on viewLabel TextThe expressiveness of the hand isolated, as in this outsized version by Zadkine, was first explored by the pioneer of modern sculpture, Auguste Rodin. Zadkine was known for the cubistic geometry of his work and its responsiveness to materials through the direct-carve method. He sometimes combined individual elements, again like Rodin, to conceive new subjects. This sculpture, deployed horizontally, originally included a ‘bird in hand’ (now lost); hence its title when acquired by Wright Ludington.
