Rops was commissioned by the publisher Alphonse Lemerre to illustrate Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly’s Les Diaboliques (in English, The She-Devils, 1874), short stories that were considered scandalously shocking when they first appeared. The Symbolist femme-fatale is represented by the sphinx, around whose neck a fallen woman clings, while the devil smugly looks on.
