Label TextIn the 1960s, Gallo was sought after for his depictions of women like this one in cast polyester resin. The medium allows for an uncanny realism that the artist deliberately disrupted by scratches and imperfections that call attention to the object’s artifice. The impression of life deadened lends this wide-eyed, disembodied gaze a medusal quality—the 20th-century rejoinder to the Symbolist sirens of Khnopff, Redon, and Rops. Though less well known today, Gallo was critically hailed in the 60s and was included in group shows at MoMA and at the 1968 Venice Biennale. His work is included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney, LACMA, and the Smithsonian. He held several teaching positions throughout his long career, most recently as professor of sculpture at the University of Illinois.
