On viewLabel TextJōmon, literally “cord-patterned" period, is named after the rope-like designs found on pottery produced during Japan’s earliest ceramic culture. Low-fired deep vessels with a marked sculptural quality like this jar, were constructed with the coil-and-paddle method and were decorated with simple geometric patterns with meandering rope-like designs.
