This subject was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s 1841 short story, A Descent into the Maelstrom. The narrator, an old man, tells the story of his survival of a shipwreck caused by a terrifying hurricane. The fright he endured caused him to age overnight. The giant skull with its macabre bulging eyeball, however, is of Kubin’s own invention.
